Our Sub-teams

Aerodynamics:

Our aerodynamics team is focused on getting our aircraft to fly. They focus on sizing, airfoil selection, lift vs drag, stability, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. This sub-team has applications in the aerospace, green energy, and automotive industries.

Structures and Mechanisms:

Our structures team focuses on keeping our planes from falling apart, both in flight and in crashes. They work on CAD design of all parts in Siemens NX, making sure all parts will fit and operate together, and stress analysis with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) packages. This sub-team has applications in nearly all engineering fields with a focus on aerospace and mechanical engineering.

Our mechanisms team designs any payload-related mechanisms, which are typically internal to the aircraft and may involve aspects of robotics, such as actuators and microcontrollers, in addition to mechanical engineering with an emphasis on mass reduction. Past mechanisms have included: dropping “vaccine vial” packages with minimal impact shock, loading many syringes as quickly as possible, and carrying nerf footballs. This sub-team works closely with structures and has applications in mechanical, aerospace, and robotics engineering.

Propulsion:

Our propulsion team is focused on getting our planes and all their mechanisms to move. They focus on the motors, batteries, electronics, radios, wiring harnesses, and control programming for our aircraft. This sub-team has applications in aerospace, computer science, and electrical engineering.

Construction and Testing:

Our construction and testing team is in charge of all physical aspects of our aircraft. They handle all of the wind tunnel, stress, and flight testing, foam and wood cutting, mechanism fabrication, and aircraft construction. All team members participate in these activities under the leadership of the construction lead. This sub-team has applications on the manufacturing side of nearly all engineering disciplines.

Business:

Our business team is in charge of all non-engineering aspects of our organization. They focus on event organization, recruitment, securing sponsorships, managing our budget, and planning travel. This sub-team has a wide application in business, marketing, and the non-engineering side of all engineering fields.
