Our structures team focuses on keeping our planes from falling apart, both in flight and in crashes. They work on CAD design of all parts in Siemens NX, making sure all parts will fit and operate together, and stress analysis with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) packages. This sub-team has applications in nearly all engineering fields with a focus on aerospace and mechanical engineering.
Our mechanisms team designs any payload-related mechanisms, which are typically internal to the aircraft and may involve aspects of robotics, such as actuators and microcontrollers, in addition to mechanical engineering with an emphasis on mass reduction. Past mechanisms have included: dropping “vaccine vial” packages with minimal impact shock, loading many syringes as quickly as possible, and carrying nerf footballs. This sub-team works closely with structures and has applications in mechanical, aerospace, and robotics engineering.
